Forum: GratefulDead Subject: How do YOU listen to the Grateful Dead?

I have a bunch of shows downloaded, and I click on my own favourite versions i have.. and then sometimes when I get bored I listen to new shows. If i like the show enough I add it to my list of favourites.

Sometimes I wanna hear a specific song and I click on a random date that I wanna hear the sound of, and try to look for that song..

Look ma no hands . . . pretty random by date and rating, mostly checking out 70's stuff these days. Found a great show yesterday by date: 9-21-73. Occasionally use the 'recommended dates' list I've been gathering from all of the people here.

Nice thread...for the last six months or so I just hop onto the LMA, and pick one of the dead shows that's recently been reviewed.

i click "shows on this day in history". then i scroll to the bottom and pick 1 show, up til the late 70s. i try to do the same thing at sugarmegs with jgb shows. sometimes i pick a random "this day..." show in the front section. some really good music there. i dont download tho i just stream.

I'm everywhere, depends on my mood or what activities I'm involved in. I will often get on a one song kick and listen to 20 different versions of just that song. Other times it will be a month or two that will pique my interest.....damn, I love being a head!!!

i randomly reach into my dead only cd rack (right now i've got 600 discs) and pull out a show, if i've heard it recently, i put it back and reach for another, mostly in my car and on my home hi fi, only use computer for streaming and dowloading, sound blows something awful on cheap, tinny computer speakers. today it was about half of 5/15/70, whAT a friggin show, i tell ya, whoooo, gave me goosebumps

I have several hundred shows on my PC...

What often works best for me is:
Close eyes --> Scroll down --> Pick --> Load to MP3 player

The last full-run I listened to was:
Fillmore West, Feb/Mar, 1969

Current Dead-Related in my MP3 player:
Tapers Section from 2-26 (Prior to RHINOgate)
Tapers Section from 7-30 (also prior to RHINOgate)
Dylan & The Dead Outtakes from gdfiles.com
Phil from 12-1-2005, Agganis Arena, Boston Univ.

I tend to bounce around a lot. Mostly it depends on my mood and the amount of time I have. It's hard to casually listen to the Grateful Dead - it tends to suck you in. Very rarely do I use it as background music. Usually I spend about an hour or two each evening sitting on the porch with the wife and dogs, enjoying some herbal enhancement (it's harvest time in NC by the way!), and listening to whatever.
I have noticed that I tend to listen to shows from the same time of the year as the current season. Spring shows in the spring, summer in the summer, fall in the fall, winter in the winter. I have always felt that their playing was influenced not only by the venue, crowd, etc. but also by the time of year. A lazy summer show just loses something in the late fall. It is not something I can pin down exactly, it's just a feeling.
Lately I have also gotten into listening to something from "this-day-in-history".
I do listen to shows from the entire run - 65 thru 95, but mainly I tend to like 73, 74, and 76 the best. When I pick an 80s or 90s show it will usually be one that I attended and most times I am listening to the recording I made at the show. I find that the memory of being there helps to make up for the decline in the later years. When I was touring the shows were all "the GRATEST ever", but looking back 15-20 years later I have realized that they really did play some clunkers.

Great thread by the way. It is always neat to find out how others experience the music.

1/2 of the time (at least) it's just iTunes coming up to a random Dead song. If I want a specific tune, I find one of my favs. If I want a whole show...I tend to stream off the archive, picking either a show at random or go by recommendations. In the next few weeks I should be receiving every 1979 show through a couple of DH vines. That should keep me busy for a while :)

Unless I have a fix for something I decided to play shows from the current month. So right now I am grooving to many sept gigs throughout the years. That's not a 100% rule but I found by doing that I mix things up and not overlook potetially great gigs
